Symbol Maths

Symbol maths is used by the author to bridge the transition from three dimensional numeracy activities onto formal written numerical calculations as sums.

The work below was the result of an initial introduction to the symbol approach as an aid to formal thinking and understanding. The child concerned was confident with the wooden base ten blocks but had failed to transfer from the concrete to written sums.
