Five bees on the hive,
Four were learning how to jive
Three bees went buzzing off in flight
Two looked up to have a fright
They saw their friend get carried away
On a tractor full of hay.
So it was that five busy bees buzzed their way through there day.
Activities and art
- Using the five finger tips of the right hand make finger prints as shown and then join the dots to make a five
- Place five pennies onto a 3D or 2D number five shape.
- Dancing to jive music.
- Learning to do the jive dance to real jive music.
- Improvised playing of percussion instruments as an accompaniment to the jive music.
- Make a pentagon shape in card divide it into five sections and stick five different types of decoration in each section, e.g. five stars, five different colours of glitter, a five coloured rainbow, draw five people, draw five trees etc.
- Make shapes and patterns with wooden, coloured card or paper pentagon shapes.
- Making a set of happy family card with five people/things in each family set. For example one family could be numbers 1 to 5; another different colours in the red family, pale pink, deep pink, ruby red, bright red, crimson red; another straight sided shapes: triangle square rectangle, diamond, pentagon ;

Another set of happy families could be made on the theme of animals especially those that can be seen in our own country side for example mammals: field mouse, rabbit, fox, squirrel, hedgehog or badger; birds; flying insects; ground insects; farm animals; water animals. Another set could be made on plants: trees that have berries; trees that have nuts; wild flowers; grasses; fungus; evergreens-plants that stay green through the winter – moss, ivy, holly, pine, and field rushes.
3D Shapes A pyramid with a square base and four triangular sides is a five sided geometric shape. This is also a five sided geometric shape.
Outdoor activities
- Make an outdoor nature picture of five special things found in an outdoor area. If one object is too big to be moved into the picture then the rest of the picture can be made around that object, e.g. if a large log with a special pattern on it is chosen then the other four items can be put beside or on the log. This is a wonderful outdoor activity for all ages and abilities because the items can be very big and/or very small and the participants can also make a decorative natural picture frame for their 3D nature picture.
- ON the beech one can make a 3D ‘five of each thing’ pictureg. the creation might include five shells and five pebbles, five pieces of drift wood and a sand castle with five towers enclosed in a frame built of sand.
- Find and photograph local plants or farm animals on a farm visit. Using five pictures of each plant or farm animal make a Happy Families card game.
